When Melody called me, she asked, “Are you going to be home for a while?”
“Sure. What do you need?”
“Davin needs some help with his homework. I told him you could help him.”
Davin rode up on his bike. He took out his notebook and pencil and sat on the porch with me.
“Grandpa, I’m writing a paper for school and I need to ask you some questions.”
“No problem,” I answered. “Ask me anything.”
“Where did I come from?” Davin asked.
“Hunh? Oh, you were born right here in San Pedro.”
“No. I mean how was I born?”
“Shouldn’t you be asking your mom these kinds of questions?”
“I did. She told me the stork brought me. See; I wrote it in my notebook.”
“Very good.”
“I asked my mom how she was born. She said the angels brought her down here. I wrote that down, too.”
“Well, that sounds about right,” I said.
“How about you, Grandpa? How were you born?”
“My folks always told me they found me in a cabbage patch,” I told him.
He wrote it down and solemnly said, “Grandpa, I think I’m in big trouble.”
“What do you mean by big trouble?”
“It’s this paper I have to turn in tomorrow.”
“What do you have written so far?” I asked.
“Davin read, “This paper is very hard to write because there hasn’t been a natural childbirth in my family for three generations.”
