Heavy rains flooding San Pedro subdivision; better drainage systems needed

Even though the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has embarked on a project to pave the main streets across the subdivisions, the recent rainfall is affecting residents. Some claim that the lack of drainage along the cement streets is causing their yards to flood. SPTC indicated that the problem will be addressed as the project includes proper drainage and infrastructure to accommodate the utility companies and the neighborhoods.

San Pedro Lions Club delivers donation to Caye Caulker fire victims

The San Pedro Lions Club is always helping those in need, and on Saturday, November 25th, they headed over to our sister island, Caye Caulker, to assist a group of fire victims with much-needed financial assistance. They handed over a financial contribution of $5,000 which was made possible with the collaboration of the San Pedro community, the San Pedro Town Council, and Lions members.

San Pedro Town Council Hosts 2nd Annual Tourism Awards

Held at El Patio Restaurant under sparkling décor, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) honored the outstanding tourism business of Ambergris Caye on Saturday evening, November 25th. Mr. Gerry Badillo and Ms. Natalie Arceo hosted the glamorous event, with the Black and White Garifuna Center performing, opening the ceremony with lively traditional dances.

Belizean media personality Glenn Tillett passes away

On Thursday, November 23rd, the death of well-known Belizean journalist, talk show host, and social media commentator Glenn Norman Tillett, 64, left many Belizeans in shock. Tillett had been receiving treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City. He was intubated on November 5th, and although doctors provided Tillett with the care needed, he did not recover and passed away.

First Garifuna Settlement Day Fishing Tournament awards top teams

The long holiday weekend commemorating the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belize was celebrated with the first fishing tournament in its honor. Held on Sunday, November 19th, the over-the-water bar and grill Overseas hosted the fishing rodeo, attracting close to 20 teams. The long-day competition saw some of the best anglers rom the island, but only one team could take the grand prize home. At the end of the day, team The Navy, manned by Kristian Marin, Jailene Ancona, and Guillermo Nuñez, were the winners. They also took the top prize for the heaviest fish (Wahoo, 39lbs) and top angler.

Garifuna Settlement Day celebrated on the island

The Garifuna community of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye joined the national Garifuna Settlement Day celebration over the weekend with parades, an all-night concert, and the traditional Yurumein, which is the re-enactment of the arrival of the Garinagu people to Belize in 1832. The annual public and bank holiday, celebrated on November 19th, was observed this year under the theme ‘Wаmúа, wаnісhіgu lubá ámuñеgü: óundаrunі hаmа nіburеіntіаn lun lаbаgаrіdu Gаrіfunа – Оur lаnd, оur сulturе, оur futurе: involving our уоuth fоr Gаrіfunа ѕurvіvаl.”

For every child, every right: San Pedro celebrates Children’s Week

Schools across Belize celebrated Children's Week starting Monday, November 13th, under the theme "For every child, every right." Here in San Pedro, children from preschools and primary schools enjoyed week-long fun, culminating on Friday, November 17th, with the island's largest primary school, San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS), hosting a grand, colorful parade across San Pedro's main streets.

Belizeans Presented with His Majesty’s New Year’s Honours

On November 15, 2023, six Belizeans were officially presented their New Year Honours from the Governor General H.E. Dame Froyla Tzalam on behalf of His Majesty King Charles III.

SPHS hosts another impressive Cultural Day

Belize’s multi-ethnic background came to life at the San Pedro High School (SPHS) during their annual Cultural Day on Friday, November 17th. The anticipated event welcomed friends and families to a fun day with students dressed in cultural clothing and elaborate booths showcasing the different cultures of Belize, their food, music, and history.

San Pedro BTIA chapter holds Annual General Meeting and Membership Mixer

On Tuesday, November 14th, the Belize Tourism Industry Association San Pedro chapter (SP BTIA) held its Annual General Meeting with a social gathering at the Hidden Treasure Restaurant. Members and guests attended the event, with Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez, Mayor Gualberto' Wally' Nuñez, and BTIA President Stewart Krohn as special guests. The annual gathering also saw the introduction of the new Chairman of the island's BTIA chapter, Nick Scavone.

San Pedro’s Philip ‘Billy’ Leslie and celebrity Chef Sean Kuylen are 2023 Oceana’s Ocean Heroes

On the 13th annual Ocean Hero Award, Oceana Belize recognized another islander with prestigious recognition. Philip ‘Billy’ Leslie was presented with the Ocean Hero Award on Friday, November 10th alongside another Belizean champion of the sea, Chef Sean Kuylen.
