Jazelie Azueta removed as UDP Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South

Following a meeting on Saturday, September 2nd by the National Party Council (NPC) of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Jazelie ‘Jaz’ Azueta was formally removed as Standard Bearer for the Belize Rural South (BRS) constituency. According to members within the party, this is the consequence of not supporting the protest held by Belize City members of the UDP in San Pedro Town on Thursday, August 31st, against the current People’s United Party (PUP) government. The decision to remove Azueta was not welcomed among UDP supporters on the island, and on Monday, September 4th, Azueta released a statement on her dismissal.

Jazeli ‘Jaz’ Azueta endorsed as UDP Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South

At a private event on Saturday, December 10th, Jazeli ‘Jaz’ Azueta was officially endorsed as the United Democratic Party (UDP) standard-bearer for the Belize Rural South (BRS) constituency consisting of San Pedro, Town Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker. The closed-door activity also saw the election of UDP delegates, who will work alongside Azueta as she prepares to contest the BRS seat in the next general elections set for 2025.

Former government minister John Saldivar accused of “significant corruption” – barred from the USA

On Tuesday, November 15th, the United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced the public designation of past government official and Area Representative for Belmopan under the United Democratic Party, John Saldivar, for involvement in "significant corruption". As a result, Saldivar and his immediate family members are no longer eligible for entry into the U.S.

On September 30th, the United Democratic Party (UDP) closed its Standard Bearers’ application period, with several party supporters across the country putting down their names for the opportunity to run for Area Representatives in the next general elections in 2025. Among those submitting their applications was San Pedrana Jazelie ‘Jaz’ Azueta, who looks forward to contesting the seat of the Belize Rural South (BRS) Constituency made up of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and St. George’s Caye.

The Opposition of the United Democratic Party protested without police authorization

As confirmed in a zoom interview with reporters yesterday, August 22nd, by Chairman of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Senator Michael Peyrefitte, a protest took place in Belize City on Tuesday, August 23rd, against the current administration under the People’s United Party (PUP). Even though the Belize Police Department did not approve to conduct the demonstration, it went uninterrupted and with no incidents.

Newly elected Caye Caulker Village Council sworn in

Following her re-election as Chairlady of Caye Caulker Village, Seleny Villanueva-Pott and her six Councilors, Elizabeth Usher, Luis Gongora, Tracie Young, Miguel Neal, Alida Blease, and Ilya Rosado, were officially sworn in as the new Village Council 2022-2023 on Tuesday, July 5th. The special event occurred at the village’s community center, and Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez attended the ceremony.

Seleny Villanueva-Pott re-elected as Caye Caulker Chairlady under independent slate

For a second time, Hicaqueña Seleny Villanueva-Pott was elected as Chairlady following the Village Council elections on Sunday, June 26th in Caye Caulker. She is the first female to be re-elected to such a post in her village. Pott has been in the Caye Caulker Village Council since 2016 when she first served as the Vice-Chair.

Notorious rapper turned politician: Shyne Barrow elected as leader of the United Democratic Party

Moses 'Shyne' Barrow, a Belizean rapper who grew up in New York City, USA, was incarcerated for almost ten years following a shooting incident and then deported to Belize, has turned his life around in an extraordinary manner. On Sunday, March 27th, Barrow was elected party leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), which has minority representation in the National Assembly. The new leader now has the task of uniting the party and winning the 2025 general election.

Shyne Barrow is Leader of the Opposition, once again

On Tuesday, February 1st, and for the second time, the Area Representative of Mesopotamia, Honourable Moses 'Shyne' Barrow, was sworn in as Leader of the Opposition (LOO) under the United Democratic Party (UDP). This came after Patrick Faber resigned from the post after being involved in a domestic issue with his fiancée. Although he is no longer the LOO, Faber continues being the leader of the UDP.
