2023 Hurricane Season wraps up; Belize spared

The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season ended on Thursday, November 30th, and was deemed very active in terms of the number of named storms. The season produced 20 named storms, ranking in fourth place for the most named storms in a season since the year 1950.

Businesses ticketed for price gouging; almost a dozen violators in San Pedro

To control price gouging across the country, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise created a Price Control Unit (PCU) and has sent inspectors to different municipalities to address non-compliant establishments. In San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, the 11 stores visited by inspectors were ticketed for price control violations. In Caye Caulker, non-compliance was reported at 75% of businesses visited, and inspectors received minimal cooperation from establishments.

BTB San Pedro’s satellite office re-opens

After being closed for over three years, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) office branch in San Pedro Town re-opened on Monday, October 30th, during an official ceremony at the Sunset Boardwalk. The anticipated BTB satellite office on the island is now located at the international water taxi terminal at the Sunset Boardwalk. It will be essential for tour operators, tour guides, and other tourism stakeholders, who will now be assisted with their tourism queries and processes on the island without the need to travel to the mainland.

Police Minister meets with murder victim’s family from San Pedro’s triple murder

The Honourable Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and in charge of the Belize Police Department, met with the family of the murder victims, Delmar Rodriguez, his baby daughter Amarie, and Carlos Chi. Musa said that although he cannot reveal what they discussed, his ministry provides all the support they can to affected families.

Juan Carlos Novel charged for the Caye Caulker homicide of Leslie Verde

On Saturday, November 4th, there was news from La Isla Cariñosa of Caye Caulker about the discovery of a woman found dead in her home. The deceased was identified as 32-year-old Leslie Verde. The body was bruised, and police have since launched an investigation into the cause of Verde's death. While investigations continue, no one has been detained.

Murder victims’ families call out police; want to speak with Police Minister

The mass shooting in San Pedrito, which left three dead, Delmar Rodriguez, 25, his baby daughter Amari Rodriguez, and friend Carlos Chi, continues to shock the community. The violent attack in the early hours of October 23rd also injured four other persons. Even though police have arrested and charged two suspects, Christian Espat and Michal Brown, the families of the fatal victims say police ignored their reports of threats. A week following the deadly shooting, they issued a statement talking about the heinous crime that has torn them apart.

Alaia Hotel launches ‘Waves of Change’ community initiative

The Alaia Belize Hotel in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye has unveiled a community initiative called ‘Waves of Change Towards a Better Belize’ aimed at creating a positive impact on the island community. The program’s first activity included a motivational activity at the San Pedro High School (SPHS) in collaboration with two media personalities from the well-known United States National Basketball Association, Victoria Jacobi, and Ashley Nicole Moss.

Caye Bank and island community contribute to SPHS telethon, raising over $200K toward needed repairs

The San Pedro community and other generous donors came together on Friday, October 27th, to support a fundraiser for the reconstruction of parts of the main building of the San Pedro High School (SPHS). The school administration stated they need $350,000 to complete all necessary repairs in their main building. A telethon held throughout Friday saw donations toward this worthy cause from individuals and stakeholders. One of those stakeholders was Caye International Bank (CIB), who not only made a monetary donation but has created a GoFundMe page to raise funds on behalf of SPHS at https://gofund.me/bbc1c852. At the end of the day, a total of $210,346 was raised in the telethon, a satisfactory amount that will aid in the ongoing works at the school.

First Garifuna Settlement Day Fishing Tournament awards top teams

The long holiday weekend commemorating the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belize was celebrated with the first fishing tournament in its honor. Held on Sunday, November 19th, the over-the-water bar and grill Overseas hosted the fishing rodeo, attracting close to 20 teams. The long-day competition saw some of the best anglers rom the island, but only one team could take the grand prize home. At the end of the day, team The Navy, manned by Kristian Marin, Jailene Ancona, and Guillermo Nuñez, were the winners. They also took the top prize for the heaviest fish (Wahoo, 39lbs) and top angler.

501 Fight Night IV captivates the crowd at Angel Nuñez Auditorium

The fourth installment of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) 501 Fight Night occurred on Saturday, November 11th, at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium with several Jiu-Jitsu and MMA rounds. The main event was the fight between San Pedro's Bryce Peterson and David Alexander Blanco from Orange Walk Town.

Ambergris Caye – a growing location for filmmaking

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye is known for being the mecca for tourism in Belize, attracting visitors worldwide. The island nicknamed 'La Isla Bonita' is also the home to foreign retirees, and recently, it has been the setting for large film projects. The two most recent productions include a horror/thriller PARADIES sequel starring Jhone Y. Lucas and island actor Horacio Louis Guerrero and Blood Knot featuring well-known Hollywood actor Michael Douglas, son Cameron Douglas, and David Morse.

Another unforgettable Halloween party at Holiday Hotel

The biggest Halloween extravaganza on the island and perhaps the country brought many characters to life at the anticipated annual celebration at the Holiday Hotel. Held in partnership with their restaurant La San Pedrana, the festivity took place on Saturday, October 28th, without disappointing and awarding the most outstanding costumes with fabulous prizes. The event included an orange carpet, contrary to the usual purple, rolled out at the entrance of the hotel’s restaurant.
