Wolfe’s Woofer: Earplugs

Dennis-Wolfe-Wolfes-Woofers“Jose!” I yelled, for the second time.
“Oh, hey Mister Dennis,” he said. “I couldn’t hear you because this guy next to me is cutting lamina with a saw.”
“I noticed that,” I said. “Jose, being around somebody cutting sheet metal with a power saw can make you deaf.”
“What?” he asked, and when I repeated it he said, “Oh, no. I can hear good.”
When I got home Sherry asked, “Did you go talk to Jose about working on the plumbing?”
“Yeah. I found him at the job site where he’s working construction. He’ll be here on Sunday to work on our leaking sink.”
“You know, I’m worried about Jose,” I told her. “All day he works next to a guy cutting roofing tin and the noise is unbelievable. If he keeps it up he’ll lose his hearing.”
“Buy him a set of earplugs,” she said. “They’re only about five dollars at the hardware store.”
“That’s a great idea.”
I bought the earplugs and took them to Jose at his job.
“Oh, thanks, Mister Dennis,” he said.
As I drove away he was putting them in.”
When he came over to the house on Sunday I asked, “How are those earplugs working out?”
He said, “I had to quit using them.”
“The first day I wore them somebody offered to buy me a beer and I didn’t hear him.”
