COVID-19 active cases on the island down to one

The latest official statistics from the Minister of Health and Wellness indicate a low presence of the COVID-19 virus in the country, with a total of 65 active cases nationwide. Meanwhile, in San Pedro Town, only one active case is reported. The ill person is said to be a visitor who continues in isolation and stable health.

According to island medical personnel, there have been no reports of COVID-19 cases among Belizeans in San Pedro for about three weeks. A significant drop in cases is welcome; however, there are some speculations as to why the number of infections is almost nil. Dr. Joshua A. Canul said that it could be that San Pedro is doing exceptionally well in controlling the virus, or people with the disease are not getting tested. The doctor urges residents to visit the Mar de Tumbo flu clinic (south of downtown) to get swabbed if they suspect being ill with the virus. He added that islanders should continue to be vigilant and follow the safety protocols (handwashing, mask-wearing, and social distancing) because COVID-19 is still a threat.

The flu clinic on the island opens Monday to Friday from 8AM to 4PM. The clinic can be reached by calling phone number 672-0911 to set an appointment to get tested.
