Recent dog attacks prompt discussions of the Dog Act on the island
The situation with aggressive and abusive dogs in certain subdivisions of San Pedro Town is becoming a concern as residents have reported attacks on their pets while in public areas. Many of these injured pets have reportedly ended up at the Saga Humane Society for treatment. A recent incident in which a dog was badly injured by one of these aggressive dogs has prompted Saga to seek a meeting with the San Pedro Town Council and police, to look into the Belize Dog Act and enforce regulations that will make public areas (such as streets) safe for all pets.

Copper, K9 protector of the San Pedro Airport
Many islanders are known for their love for dogs and Ambergris Caye is one of those pet havens with great stories involving these furry friends. One of these untold tales is about a pot-licker known as Copper, who hangs around/guards the hangar area of Tropic Air at the John Greif III municipal airport. Known to have been abandoned from a very young age, Copper found love growing up around motorized equipment, paint shops, and eventually aircraft.

Despite conservation efforts, another American Crocodile is butchered on Ambergris Caye
According to ACES, the remains of the mature female animal was found floating in the Sewage Waste Treatment lagoons (WASA ponds) with a fractured skull, stab wound through the belly, and a clean slice through the base of the tail. This latest poaching incident brings to light the continued increase of illegal activities committed against the natural environment and the lack of enforcement by local authorities.
