SPTC to provide monthly support to Saga Humane Society

SACNW and Saga Humane Society benefit from annual Kelly McGuire birthday bash

Every February, award-winning country singer/songwriter Kelly McGuire comes to San Pedro Town to celebrate his birthday with performances to raise funds for local non-profit organizations. The South Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch (SACNW) and the island’s Saga Humane Society are two recipients. The events are not just fun but worthy causes that generated much-needed funds for these two vital organizations on the island.

Recent dog attacks prompt discussions of the Dog Act on the island

The situation with aggressive and abusive dogs in certain subdivisions of San Pedro Town is becoming a concern as residents have reported attacks on their pets while in public areas. Many of these injured pets have reportedly ended up at the Saga Humane Society for treatment. A recent incident in which a dog was badly injured by one of these aggressive dogs has prompted Saga to seek a meeting with the San Pedro Town Council and police, to look into the Belize Dog Act and enforce regulations that will make public areas (such as streets) safe for all pets.

Mission accomplished! Saga spays/neuters and vaccinates over 100 cats and dogs

San Pedro’s Saga Humane Society exceeded their goal and spayed/neutered and vaccinated 105 animals (61 dogs and 44 cats) at no cost in just four days. Initially, the aim was to offer the free clinic service for 100 animals, but thanks to the outpouring of support from volunteers and donors, the team at Saga was able to go beyond that number.

Saga receives some courtesy care from Xsite Belize Sailing & Adventures

On Tuesday, August 31st, staff, and volunteers from Xsite Belize Sailing & Adventures went to SAGA Humane Society’s Fort Dog to make much-needed improvements. The facility is now in better condition for the comfort and safety of the dogs after a day’s work.

Many islanders are known for their love for dogs and Ambergris Caye is one of those pet havens with great stories involving these furry friends. One of these untold tales is about a pot-licker known as Copper, who hangs around/guards the hangar area of Tropic Air at the John Greif III municipal airport. Known to have been abandoned from a very young age, Copper found love growing up around motorized equipment, paint shops, and eventually aircraft.

As the world recovers from the blunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, the island’s Saga Humane Society, continues operating, doing their best to shelter homeless animals and provide services to the community. The non-profit organization welcomes volunteers and is also in need of financial support.

According to ACES, the remains of the mature female animal was found floating in the Sewage Waste Treatment lagoons (WASA ponds) with a fractured skull, stab wound through the belly, and a clean slice through the base of the tail. This latest poaching incident brings to light the continued increase of illegal activities committed against the natural environment and the lack of enforcement by local authorities.
