For the first time ever in San Pedro, the Poor and Famous Youth Culture Club hosted its Lionman Competition here on the island. The race comprising of three legs of competition started around 8:30am on Saturday August 27th from the Belize Yacht Club Dock. The race involved a swim, sprint and for the final leg, biking.
With four competitors signed up, it was going to be a short day. Competing were 15 year old Emir Marin, 3rd year student at the SPHS; Brandon Santos, 15 year old 3rd year student at SPHS; Jordan Santos, 14 year old 1st year student at SPHS and Alfonso Reynard, 14 year old student of San Francisco RC School in Orange Walk.
The first leg of the race saw the competitors swimming from the dock at the BYC to the Ramon’s Village Beach. The second race was a sprint from Ramon’s Village to the San Pedro Central Park. Following this, there was a two lap cycling race north bound on Barrier Reef Drive to Caribeña St., then west to Pescador Drive then south to Tarpon Street and back to Barrier Reef Drive to the Central Park.
At the end of the race Brandon Santos emerged in first place, winning all three legs of the race in a little under 35 minutes. In second place was Emir Marin, followed by Jordan Santos and finally Alfonso Reynard. While it was expected that there were to be much more competitors, the four that did competed did an exceptional job.
Organizer Mr. Larry Sutherland informed The San Pedro Sun that while this is the first time that he has attempted the triathlon here on the island, he hopes that this type of sporting event may become a bi-monthly occurrence. There is an annual Lionman Competition held in Belize City, and it is his hope that in the future, San Pedro will be able to have representation in that competition.
The Club is also planning on an all day Under-15 Basketball competition on September 21st for basketball enthusiasts and hopes that the community will be equally supportive in providing sponsorship.
All participants received many prizes provided by generous sponsors of the event. Organizers take this opportunity to thank the following individuals and establishments for their support: Amigos del Mar Dive Shop, Aqua Scuba Center, ACES American Crocodile Education Sanctuary, Bowen and Bowen Ltd., Belize Down Under, Belize National Fire Services, Belize Bible Society, Caribbean Breeze Tours, Cholo’s Golf Carts, Captain Morgan’s Retreat, Captain Sharks, Casa Pan Dulce, Duke Marine, Ecologic Divers, Estel’s Dine By the Sea, Graniel’s Dreamland, Hidden Treasure, Island Adventure Golf Cart Rental, Island Jungle Tours, Kama Lounge, Latitudes Café, Love Belize Resort Wear, Oh Danny Boy Realty, PAHO, Pirates Pizza, Playa Chel, Premium Wines, Riverside Tavern, Reef Adventures, Sail Sports Belize, San Pedro Fitness Club, San Pedro Water sports, Searious Adventures, Southwind Properties, Spindrift Hotel, Steve Stinging Scorpio Tattoos, Sun Breeze Hotel, The San Pedro Sun, Train Station, Tropic Air, Xanadu and the Fort Street Tourism Village.
