After 53 days COVID-19 free, Belize has a new confirmed positive case. According to the Ministry of Health, the new case was confirmed on Friday, June 5th, and it is that of a 27- year-old Belizean male, who was repatriated to Belize via a cruise ship on May 23rd.

The contact tracing for this individual is starting now, and the due process of informing the cruise ship and relevant counterparts have started.

Up to June 4th, Belize had only registered 18 positive COVID cases, with two deaths, and 16 successfully recovered. However, a second wave is expected, and chances are it will come from bordering countries or abroad. With this 19th case, certain restrictions are expected to be implemented by the government in order to avoid any spread of the virus.

The government advises Belizeans to follow hygienic rules such as washing hands with soap and water, using a hand sanitizer as well, covering a cough or sneeze, try not to touch the eyes, nose, or mouth. Follow official sources for information, and try to practice social distancing, go out only when necessary, and always wear a mask.
