It starts with the first step: my journey in Crossfit with CrossfitCFS

Sweat, Weights and the Pursuit of that Bikini (body)

Month 1
It’s officially a month since I started going to CrossfitCFS and I would like to cue the applause and parade scheduled for the weekend! (I’m kidding…kind of…)

Coaches Liliana and Drew – I either love them or truly dislike them, depending on what the WOD is!

I even agreed to share my experiences with readers of The San Pedro Sun! Everyone’s journey is unique. When that desire has built up and you are ready to make a change, nothing can stop you. I hope my experience can help in pushing you the extra step that will land you at the starting gate. If anything, doing something this different is tons of fun!

Believe me, I did the jogging along the beach (until I decided that my legs really hated running). I worked out in the privacy of my home off and on for a year, trying to ‘get fit’ before I would work out in public. I didn’t want anyone to think of me as too fat or too out of shape to be in the gym. (Really! What was I thinking?!) Guess what? Those people working out around me? They’re too busy trying to finish their own workout to notice that I’m breathing heavily or that I have to take a rest. They are trying hard to be better versions of themselves too! The mental hurdle is the hardest, and once I crossed that line, I have not looked back!!

I even kept a diary on my Crossfit experience for this first month…and I thought I would share some fun excerpts:
“Oh god I can’t feel my arms!”
“I had to get Pookie to remove my sports bra today.”
“Will I ever graduate from PVC to real weights?”
“Can I have the PVC back? This weighted bar is really heavy after the fifth repetition…”
“I think I broke my tendons, I can’t stretch out my arms fully…Pookie had to undress me again.”
“I really hate running.” (The first time)
Crossfit-CFS-4“If I have to squat one more time…grrr”
“I really, really, REALLY hate, running…” (after what felt like the fiftieth time)

And then, finally, when I went on a tour up a mountain and didn’t pass out during the two-hour hike: “I would like to thank CrossfitCFS for kicking my butt and helping me get there. Next time I’ll maybe breathe less loudly, but no matter, a year ago, I would have given up halfway.

So yes, while every time I am in the box and feel like the WODs are especially designed to wring out every last drop of sweat from me, I know that I am getting stronger, better, and healthier. I’ve accepted that it is what I want, and that it is what I deserve. I’m facing that challenge and taking on each WOD with the mindset that it will bring me closer to my goal. (Bikini bod, September, 2014!! Whoot, Whoot!)

Crossfit-CFS-Goofy
Like I said, Drew is really goofy!

What I learned:
WOD = Workout Of the Day; Box = Workout Space; Drew is really goofy and funny, and that makes working out fun.

What I like/love:
I love weights. I love lifting, and I love my coach Liliana (who doesn’t?!) for encouraging me to add just a teeny bit.

What I dislike:
Running.

Coach Says:
“You can do it!” and “800 meters is nothing!”

I get coached by Liliana Nuñez and Drew Forman, and while each of them have a different approach, both are encouraging beyond belief, and they make me feel like I can do one more set, that I can add 10 more pounds, and that, while I hate running, I can still finish up the 800 meters, even if I’ve slowed to a crawl at the end. Every bit of effort counts.

Ricky Luna and Rene Reyes Jr. are assistant coaches who make the evening classes fun, but when the going gets tough, they are there every step of the way too.

CrossfitCFS is located in Boca Del Rio, currently at the same locations as DJ’s, but a new box is being built, and soon, the location will be next to GoFish (also on Boca Del Rio drive). Check them out on Facebook, and drop in if you feel like doing something fun and different – you just might love it!
