Press Release – Belize Press Office – Belmopan, 14th June, 2012
The Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and Sustainable Development and the Forest Department are informing the General Public that the logging season will close on Friday, June 15th, 2012. Loggers are advised that the harvesting of trees beyond the 15th of June will not be permitted.
The closure of logging activities coincides with the arrival of the rainy season which is not conducive to logging operations. Apart from an increased risk of loss of human life, logging during the rainy season often results in damage to forest soils and to public access roads.
The Forest Department will assess all forest produce harvested before the 15th of June on a mutually agreed schedule with the loggers. There will be no consideration for extension of forest permits and licenses after the close of the season.
The logging season will re-open on the October 15th 2012. Applications for licenses for the next logging season should be submitted by July 31st, 2012, to the Chief Forest Officer, Forest Department, Belmopan.
