San Pedro celebrates 31 years of Township

Share

On Friday, November 27th, San Pedro Town celebrated 31 years of being a municipality. To commemorate the occasion, The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) held an ‘Open House Day’ inviting the general public and the island’s primary schools to tour the Town Board Building and learn about the jobs done at the SPTC. The event also included students and professors from the Washington University of Health and Science – Belize City Campus, who provided all sorts of medical test demonstrations. To top off the day, Mayor Daniel Guerrero, along with Councilor Ruben Gonzalez, paid a courtesy visit to San Pedro’s first Mayor, Gilberto ‘Chico’ Gomez presenting him with a check in recognition for all his efforts in the development of the island.San Pedro 31 Years Township Day-1
According to Mayor Guerrero, it was fitting to showcase to the residents and students what the Town Board has done and is doing for the community. At the Open House, visitors toured the renovated facilities of the SPTC and learned about the services offered by the Council. At the same time they were able to familiarize themselves with the office spaces, interacting with the staff and elected town officials.San Pedro 31 Years Township Day-6
Mayor Guerrero stated that one of the reasons why this year’s celebration was dedicated to education was in order to inform the younger generation about the significance of such occasions and citing the island’s evolution since it became a town 31 years ago. “A lot has been accomplished in all these past years and I am thankful to all the past Mayors and Councilors. It is something that I maintained and acknowledge, and in recognition of that we want to establish civic pride and thus, this year we went educational. A lot of children will hear at their schools about Township Day, but they might not know what it really is about. So I believe it’s very important to educate them about what is transpiring at the Town Board,” said Guerrero. He mentioned that this activity was long coming and he was happy that it was finally accomplished.San Pedro 31 Years Township Day-4
The many students that visited his office were curious and had some really good questions for the Mayor. “This is really good, because it makes you realize that children are listening, they are watching the news, listening to the radio and becoming aware of what is happening in their community. But I believe it should not be done just during Township Day, regardless if they come here to our offices or we go to their school, these activities should be done more often with our students, who are the future leaders of our community and country,” said Guerrero.San Pedro 31 Years Township Day-9
Guerrero ended by emphasizing that the island has come a long way in development and continues to be the tourism magnet for Belize. San Pedro has been recognized with several prestigious prizes for being one of the best tourism destinations in the region, and according to the Mayor Guerrero it is all a result of the hard dedicated work everyone is putting in.San Pedro 31 Years Township Day-10
As part of the Township celebration, the SPTC announced the pavement of Tropical Wave Street as one of the many projects to take place on Ambergris Caye. This is part of the transformation commitment the municipality embarked on for the continuing development of the island. He indicated that there are more good things coming to the island, more projects that will continue the positive development for the benefit of all islanders.

San Pedro officially transitioned from a fishing village to a town on November 27th, 1984 under the leadership of former Mayor Gilberto ‘Chico’ Gomez. The San Pedro Sun joins the community in wishing all islanders a happy 31st anniversary and a happy Township Day!
