The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) inaugurated the facility that will host the San Pedro House of Culture. The new building is located on Angel Coral Street directly across the Honorable Louis “Cuz” Sylvester Sporting Arena (Saca Chispas). The facility was inaugurated on Wednesday November 19th by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation Hon Manuel Heredia Jr.
While the San Pedro House of Culture (Casa de Cultura) has been operating for almost three years without a physical structure, the new building will strengthen the work being done to preserve the island’s rich history and culture. During the ceremony, the San Pedro House of Culture Coordinator Mito Paz indicated that the project is a dream come true. “The project of establishing a House of Culture for the island took a lot of time and dedication and we are happy for the support of the various stakeholders who worked to fulfill the need. This will help us in protecting our island’s culture and history, which is very important to us,” said Paz.
With the House of Culture built, valuable pieces as well as permanent exhibits depicting the island’s history will have a home. “The role of NICH is to foster as well as to protect our history. In keeping with our mandate, we were able to fill the gap and accomplish the establishment of the facility. It will finally give San Pedro a home, where the island’s culture is concerned,” said Diane Haylock, President of NICH.
Speaking at the event, Heredia said that one of the mandates of his ministry is culture preservation. “Belize has a rich and diverse culture. The history, music, food, clothing and tradition of our people form a part of the Belizean experience which is an important element in our tourism product. Our role in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture is to foster and protect our culture.”
During the event, live performances were done by the Garifuna Jankunu Dancers of San Pedro Town. Those in attendance also had the experience of enjoying traditional food as well touring the building while appreciating the exhibits that were set up for the occasion. Guests at the event included the Culture Ministers of Central America who were on the island as part of a working visit.
