Splash Summer Camp: teaching children valuable swimming skills

Share

The third annual Splash Summer camp kicked off on Monday, August 3rd at the Boca del Rio Park in San Pedro Ambergris Caye. The program, which is open to children ages 6-15, teaches the basics of swimming. The camp will run for the entire month of August, on Mondays to Thursdays from 8:30AM to 11:30AM. All interested youth are invited to attend any of the camp days.2015 Splash Summer Camp-4
According to camp organizer Kent Gabourel, the first day had a good turnout and the number of participants is expected to increase in the coming weeks. “As we get more of the swimming materials, we expect to have more children each day. Apart from keeping the children busy during their summer holiday, the camp will also make way for great swimmers as we will teach them the different skills of swimming,” said Gabourel. “Swimming is very healthy for the children since they work out their entire body, keeping them fit, and they learn skills to swim properly in any type of conditions or waters,” stated Gabourel.2015 Splash Summer Camp-5
Due to the accumulation of Sargasso near the park, organizers of the camp are considering having it in other parts of the island. “We are hampered by the sea grass and there are plans to change the location of the camp activities. We are considering going in front of Mayan Princess Hotel where there is less grass in the water and it is still a suitable area for swimming, as it is not too deep,” said Gabourel.2015 Splash Summer Camp-1
Gabourel, who is a member of the San Pedro Triathlon Association, indicated that the community has always helped them whenever they seek their assistance. In return, they are offering their services to the children, teaching the children to swim as a way of giving back to the community.2015 Splash Summer Camp-2
Parents are encouraged to enroll their children in the swimming camp to learn this valuable skill. At the end of the camp, participants will master the most basic skills of swimming and become great swimmers.
Gabourel, on behalf of the San Pedro Triathlon Association, thanks the community for the support, as well as the Triathlon team, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC), Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr. and the Government of Belize for providing funds for the camp.2015 Splash Summer Camp-3
