“I don’t understand how people can survive on the food that’s available in Belize,” the lady said to me.
She was ahead of me in the line at the grocery store, struggling with a basket-load of shopping.
“What do you mean?” I asked. “It looks like you have a lot of food in your basket.”
“Yes, but most of it is so different from what I used to buy back home in Texas; especially the meats. In Texas I could walk into any supermarket and buy a beautiful sirloin steak.”
“In Belize meat is usually bought at the butcher shop; not the supermarket,” I told her.
“But I see you have a package of meat in your basket,” she said. “What kind is it?”
“It’s pig tail. One of my favorite meals is white rice and stew beans with pig tail.”
“Oh, my God!” she said. “That sounds terrible! I don’t think I could ever eat pig tail.”
The line moved and she started putting her purchases on the counter.
“What does the label say on this package of meat?” she asked the Chinese clerk, as she showed him a package. “I think it says Beef Tips.”
“What you talk about lady?” the clerk said. “That say Beef Tongue.”
“Y-u-u-c-k! Beef tongue sounds so gross!”
“You no like beef tongue?” the clerk asked. “Good for stew and soup.”
“I could never eat something that came from a cow’s mouth.”
The clerk said, “Ah. Yes, lady. But I see you buying eggs.”
