My telephone rang. When I picked it up Melody was already talking.
“I need a favor,” she said.
“Sure,” I said. “What’s up? What do you need?”
“There are only two more days of school. Can you take Davin in the morning and pick him up when class is over?”
“Sure.”
“How are you doing, boy?” I asked, when I picked him up the next morning.
“I’m doing fine, Grandpa,” he said.
“Only two more days of school,” I said. “I bet you’ll be glad for vacation to get here.”
“I sure will,” he said. “I hate school.”
“Oh, you probably like school. You just don’t like the tests. Are you doing tests now?”
“No. We’re already done with tests,” he said. “We’re just wasting time now.”
“Were the tests hard?” I asked.
“Oh, no,” he said. “The tests were easy. It was the answers that were hard.”
I arrived a little bit early to pick him up from school so I took a seat on the classroom steps.
“All right class,” I heard the teacher say. “I am going to show you some more pictures of animals and you tell me what they are and where they are from. OK, what is this one?”
“An elephant!” some little voices yelled out, and several of them shouted, “Africa!” while one said “India.”
“Very good,” the teacher said. “What is this?”
“A buffalo!” they shouted, and someone yelled “North America!”
“Excellent. And this one?” the teacher asked.
The class was silent.
“No one knows what this is?” the teacher said. “This is a kangaroo. It is a native of Australia?”
“Are you sure?” a small girl’s voice asked.
“Of course. Why do you ask?”
“Wow!” the little girl said. “My auntie is married to one of them.”
