John said, “Of all my practical jokes the one I like best is the hat joke that I pulled on old George.”
I had run into John at the bus station as I was returning from Chetumal, Mexico to Belize and I was really glad to see a familiar face.
“Which joke was that?” I asked.
“George bought a new hat from Toucan gift shop. I went down and bought one exactly like it except it was three sizes bigger. He showed up for coffee the next morning and while he had the hat off I switched hats. He got ready to leave and the hat fell right over his ears.”
“That’s great.” I said.
“That was just the beginning,” John said. “Every few days I would switch hats. One day it would be perfect. The next day it would fall over his eyes. Then I quit for a month and just as suddenly it would start all over. It just about drove him crazy. I did it until he lost the hat while he was on the water taxi and he never did figure it out.”
“I’m just glad you never got me with any of your practical jokes,” I said.
“You’ve always been too smart.”
“I don’t feel very smart,” I told him. “Somebody stole my wallet this morning. I was hoping to borrow bus fare from you.”
“I’m just coming back from the casino,” John said. “I went broke and I only have enough to buy one ticket.”
“Oh, man! I’m stuck.”
“Let’s do this,” John said. “I’ll buy a ticket and you hide under the seat. I’ll hide you with my legs and my jacket.”
“Great idea,” I said.
We boarded and the bus took off. Soon, I heard the ticket collector coming down the aisle taking tickets. He stopped at our seat.
“Ticket, please,” he said to John.
“Here you are, sir.”
“Mister, you gave me two tickets. Where is the other person?”
“It’s for my friend,” John said. “He’s a little bit crazy and he likes to ride under the seat.”
