The annual National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) football championship started in San Pedro Town on Friday, February 17th, at the Ambergris Stadium. The two-day competition (Friday and Saturday) will see eight high school teams nationwide competing to become the next national champion.

The high schools vying for the championship include Independence High School, St. Ignatius High School, Delille Academy, Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School, Westley College, Orange Walk Technical High School, Excelsior High School, and Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico. The event included an opening ceremony introducing the participating high schools. This year’s host, San Pedro High School (SPHS), did not qualify for NSSSA finals but helped organize the opening ceremony, which saw the participation of their marching band.

Pastor Clive Welsh blessed the event, and Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez welcomed the different high schools to La Isla Bonita. Mayor Nuñez told the young athletes to feel proud of their schools, do their best, enjoy every minute of the game, and wished them all the best.

The formalities also saw islander athlete Ada Cordova, a former student of SPHS and NSSSA champion. Cordova reminded the high schoolers to follow their passion and not listen to negative comments. “They may tell you that in Belize, it is impossible to make it as an athlete, but I tell you that if you believe in yourself and what you do, anything is possible,” she said. Cordova told the team members to be patient and to work hard for their goals in sports or anything else throughout their lives. The ceremony ended with encouraging words by the NSSSA president, who asked everyone to play clean and respect the sport.

Immediately after the ceremony, the first games started. The winning teams on the first day will advance to the championship on Saturday, while the other teams will compete for third and fourth place.
