San Pedro’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) coach and fighter, Martin Dawson, continues to prepare for a Central American championship from July 10th through the 15th of this year set to take place in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. Dawson has been selected as the Belizean delegate and is looking to take some fighters with him to participate in the Pacific Coast Fight League tournament. Dawson shared that the idea is to organize an MMA tournament in Belize before the Nicaragua event and pick the best three Belizean fighters. According to Dawson, the weight categories to participate in the championship include 135lbs (Bantamweight), 155lbs (Lightweight), and 170lbs (Welterweight). The Belizean team will comprise of six persons. Dawson as the delegate, one international judge named Elmer Rodriguez, coach, and three athletes/fighters. Dawson is recognized regionally through his continuous work and training with the regulating Commission of Mixed Martial Arts (CRAMM) and the Latin America Commission (CORLAMM). Currently, Dawson is CRAMM’s President, and Rodriguez the Vice President.
Dawson is the founder of Pit Fighters training school on the island and feels honored to be considered for such a tournament and encourages any aspiring Belizean MMA fighters to join his team. Dawson’s experience has taken him to historic events such as founding the Lima Lama Federation for Central America. The new regional organization, Confederacion Centroamericana de Lima Lama-Concadell, sanctions events in Central America and will help the sport in Belize and the region.
The island MMA coach hopes to take a trio of athletes to Nicaragua in July and deliver an outstanding performance. Martin Dawson is also looking to represent the country and participate in another international MMA event this year in November on the island of Puerto Rico.
