After taking a pause due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the local football tournament, Copa San Pedro resumed its games. The tournament held its semi-final games of the 2020 Closing Season over the weekend, and on Saturday, August 1st, it will be hosting the championship match between Conquerors F.C and San Mateo F.C., beginning at 7PM inside the Ambergris Stadium.
The first round in the Copa playoffs took place on Thursday, July 23rd at 7PM between San Pedro High School(SPHS) F.C. and San Mateo F.C. The match ended with the victory of San Mateo over the high school team by a minimal difference, 4-3. The second game saw Conquerors taking on G-Strikers F.C. The first half ended goal-less, but in the second half of the game, Conquerors upped their play and defeated G-Strikers 2-0.Â
On Sunday, July 26th, the second round of the semi-finals saw Conquerors facing G-Strikers. Conquerors surprised G-Striker’s goalkeeper with a quick goal. In the second half, during injury time, Conquerors found another opportunity a few feet from the opponent’s goal post and scored its second goal. Conquerors advanced to the finals with an aggregate score of 4-0.
Next was SPHS against San Mateo going all out against each other and hoping to acquire the coveted ticket to face Conquerors at the championship event. The game was an action-packed match, with SPHS controlling most of the play. Despite a surge in dominance, SPHS was unable to open the score and neither did San Mateo. However, in the overall score, San Mateo emerged victorious with a 4-3 aggregate score.
ALL islanders are invited to come out and support the favourite team in their last match of this Copa San Pedro season set for this Saturday starting at 7PM at the Ambergris Stadium. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
