Two-time champions of the National Elite Basketball League (NEBL), the San Pedro Tiger Sharks, have begun the fourth NEBL season on the right foot by defeating the Orange Walk Running Rebels. At the pre-season game held on Saturday, December 10th at the Orange Walk Sporting Complex, the Tiger Sharks came out with a 61-53 victory over the host team.
From the beginning of the game, San Pedro Tiger Sharks’ Ashton Edwards had the team leading by as much as 15 points. Orange Walk Rebels tried to make a comeback, but Kurt ‘Chengo’ Burgess netted an additional 13 points for the Tiger Sharks, followed by Dar Harris who sank 10 more points in favour of the visiting team.
The game intensified when Randy Usher from the Rebels began leading his team with help from Roger Reneau and Elvis Olivera, but it was too late to stop the Tiger Sharks from claiming victory. Jamal Kelly and Douglas Valley finished the night with a combined 15 points, giving the San Pedro Team the inevitable win.
The 2017 NEBL season will officially tip off on January 13, 2017, and will have the participation of eight teams. La Isla Bonita will once again be proudly represented by the Tiger Sharks, who will attempt to bring home their third championship.
All basketball fans are encouraged to come out to support their favourite teams and players. The League is anticipating an excellent season for basketball. The first game of the season will take in Belize City between the current champions Belize Hurricanes against Belize City No Limit.
