This past week, a total of eight teams competed in the Mayor and Minister’s Cup quarterfinals at the Honorable Louis Sylvestre Stadium. The intensity of the tournament drew sport lovers to the games, rooting for their favorite teams as they played their hearts out for one of four spots in the semi-finals.
On Saturday, April 2nd, the first game saw Veterans facing Belize Pro Divers. At the end of the match, the game finished in a draw, leading to overtime minutes. In the end, Veterans took the final victory of a 2-1 win. Due to sudden inclement weather, game two between Peace Makers and Progresso Boys was rescheduled for the second game day, to be played after the remaining matches.
Day two of matches started early on Sunday, April 2nd at 3PM, allowing football fanatics and children to witness the excitement. In game one, Catrachos shone on field, making it impossible for San Mateo to score a goal. Catrachos clearly took the victory in 8-0 game.
Match two saw, Ambergris Divers versus Searious Warriors, and had the crowd roaring approval with each goal scored. Ambergris Divers took on the lead after second half, confidently securing a win with the final score of 5-2. In the final match of the night, the police team “Peace Makers” and Progresso Boys had their chance at facing one another, and in the end, the Peace Makers was victorious with a final score of 4-0.
The conclusion of the 11-a-side tournament is approaching and all four teams: Veterans, Catrachos, Ambergris Divers and Peace Makers are qualified to advance to semi-final rounds on Sunday, April 10th.
