The San Pedro Sports Committee hosted a fun filled football marathon on Sunday, December 6th at the Honorable Louis Sylvester Sporting Complex. The marathon came as a result of the anticipated football tournament which is set to start shortly. Despite the gloomy weather, a total of nine teams showed up, and football fans of all ages came to support and cheer for their favorite teams. The different teams that participated were Catrachos, Vince, PSG, San Mateo, Peace Makers, Belize Pro Divers, Juniors, Progresso Boys and United.
After the first set of games, Vince and Progresso Boys made it to the second round where they faced each other. Progresso Boys easily defeated Vince with a clean 4-0. Meanwhile Catrachos beat Belize Pro Divers 1-0 and United defeated PSG with a similar score. Each game consisted of a total of 40 minutes play time.
The following round of the competition was the semi-finals and the first match was between Catrachos against United. After an intense game, Catrachos managed to win the match with a solid 2-0 qualifying for the finals against Progresso Boys who was the team with the most goals. The crowd became more excited while members of each time made their final preparations for the final game. After an interlude of 15 minutes, the final match kicked off.
Progresso Boys were determined to win this final match and take the first place title in the marathon. However when the first half of the game was completed, Catrachos were already ahead by two goals to zero. On the second half of the game, Progresso Boys continued pushing and making several dangerous attempts to break through Catrachos’ goal keeper, but all efforts were fruitless. Nearing the end of the match, Catrachos nailed the game with a long ball kick resulting in their third goal and giving them the victory and first place in the marathon. The Catrachos expect to have a similar result when the football tournament officially begins on December 18th.
Head organizer of the marathon, Councilor Hector ‘Tito’ Alamilla would like to thank everyone that helped make the event possible. He reiterates that it is important to have such activities on the island in order to keep our youth active and help them develop their skills in such sports. Special thanks also go to the teams, their captains and owners, and members of the San Pedro Sports Committee.
