The San Pedro Cycling Club (SPCC) hosted its annual Garifuna Settlement Day Bicycle Race on Thursday, November 19th as part of the day’s festivities. The race was organized by Kent “Bob” Gabourel, a renowned triathlon athlete, in conjunction with the SPCC. The main purpose of the sporting activity is to promote sportsmanship on the island. The race started at the Central Park and included three categories: juveniles, juniors, and seniors.
The competition took all cyclists from the different categories around the town core then ending at Central Park. The juveniles completed a total of five laps, while the juniors did ten. In the seniors category, they did three laps from the town core down to Victoria House Resort and back. At their arrival at the finish line, spectators cheered on their favorite cyclist.
In the juvenile division, walking away with the first place was Adrian who received a trophy and a $25 gift certificate while in second place was Luis winning a trophy and $15 gift certificate. In the juniors’ category Dixon Paguada took the first place, winning a trophy and a $75 gift certificate. In second place was Jose who won a trophy and $50 gift certificate and in third place was Kyle Jacobs who received a trophy and a $25 gift certificate. In the last division, the seniors, Jason Marino took home the first place along with a $75 gift certificate while the second place was won by Charles Garay who went home with a trophy and $50 gift certificate. The third place which included a trophy and a $25 gift certificate was won by Andrew Vasquez.
