Sunday, June 15th, 2014 was a wonderful day for our Father’s Day Canoe Challenge co-sponsored by Black Orchid Resort and Sea Sure Real Estate. The race was from Flowers Bank Village to Black Orchid Resort in Burrell Boom. There were seven teams in six categories that participated. The race took off a little after 9 am.
First overall and Intramural to complete the route in 3:06:30 was “Turd’z” – Martin Gideon, Elvis Sutherland and Glenford Sutherland – sponsored by Martin Woods. They out paddled “White Feathers” – bothers, Kenrick and Michael Daniels, self-sponsored, of the Juniors Category who finished in 3:11:53.
Closely behind them by just over a minute was “Print Belize / Wrobel & Co” – Rudolph Gentle, Kaylon Hyde and Francisco Perez – they finish third overall and first Pleasure. Capturing second Pleasure and fifth overall was the “Original Turd’z” – Raymond Woods, Jarrid Thompson and Derocy Haylock clocking in at 4:01:30.
Usually at races, the male teams dominate; however, for this Father’s Day Challenge we saw the male team “Guydis Canoes” – Chris Guydis and Wilberto Daniels – finished at six position overall at time 4:12:00. We’ll like to recognize a true father Chris Guydis who paddled alongside three of his daughters for the entire race making it a father – daughter activity on this special Father’s Day.
Fourth overall and Mixed Category was “Black Orchid Resort” – Jayda Guydis, and the Sanchez brothers, Jermaine and Jeremy – completing the race in 3:59:10. In the Female Category were the Guydis sisters, Avis and Amber with Denise Diaz of team “Blue Stripes” sponsored by Guydis Canoes finishing at 4:12:28.
All first place teams in each category received $150 cash and first place medals. Second place finishers received $50 cash and medals. Additionally, 1st place overall winners “Turd’z” received a “Dinner for Two” courtesy Black Orchid Resort and the second place overall “White Feathers” received a beautifully decorated cake courtesy Mrs Guydis.
Special Thanks to our sponsors, Black Orchid Resort and Sea Sure Real Estate. Thanks to Mrs Guydis for that cake and also assisting with time-keeping.
The next event which is on August 30th is our BECOL sponsored, Annual Patriotic Paddle – A Charitable Fundraising Event!
