San Pedro Seadogs’ tournament run ends with a 4-0 win

On Sunday, April 15th the San Pedro Seadogs played their final match in the preliminary round of the Premiere League of Belize (PLB) football tournament. While the team did not qualify to move on to the semi finals, they performed exceptionally, winning their last game of the season against FC San Felipe Barcelona in a score of 4 – 0, placing them third in Zone A and fifth in the overall competition.
In speaking of the overall performance of the Seadogs, team captain, Kent Gabourel stated; “Actually I am a little bit disappointed. But at the end of it, I feel happy about the turn out that my players did; the effort that they came out and gave to us. We could have done better, had we not been slacking off in the earlier part of the season. Everyone realized it at the last three games. We started to push everything into it and this is the outcome. We have played three home games at home. We drew one and won two in scores of 6-0 and 4-0. At the end of the day, we came in third with 15 points. I’d say we did pretty well.”
In speaking of where the team went wrong during the tournament, Gabourel stated, “We definitely lacked community support. Most of our players on this team do it for the love of the sport. We are not paid; we do not receive any compensation. I believe that in the middle of the season, what really hurt us was the local competition. There are rumors of individuals being paid to compete locally. With this, some of our players chose to play at home instead of traveling with the team to some of our away games to compete. This really hurt the team mentally and physically and was a big problem that probably cost us the tournament.”
What’s next for the Seadogs? Gabourel informed The San Pedro Sun that he hopes to keep the team together during the off season, practicing and preparing for the next football competition, which is expected to commence within the next two to two and a half months. Gabourel also thanks everyone who supported the Seadogs during the PLB competition, including Mr. Billy Leslie and Susana Eiley. “Hats off to the committee – especially Mrs. Susana Eiley; she does a wonderful job for the team.” The San Pedro Seadogs takes the opportunity to reach out to the business community and the community of San Pedro to become a bigger part of a Team that has taken the San Pedro name to national competitions.
