Municipal Elections are fast approaching, and individuals eyeing the post of mayor from both the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s United Party (PUP) are announcing their intentions to contest the upcoming political race on March 3, 2021. These aspiring candidates and their respective councilor slates will seek the opportunity to serve San Pedro Town for 2021-2024.
Current UDP mayor Daniel Guerrero appears not to be seeking re-election, as current Councilor, Ruben ‘Rux’ Gonzalez has submitted his name for the post of mayor. Gonzalez hopes to have the opportunity to lead his town and offers more than 25 years of experience in accounting and administration. He has served as councilor for the past six years under Guerrero’s administration. According to his supporters, his administrative skills are an asset for La Isla Bonita’s well-management.
One mayoral hopeful for the PUP is Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez, who previously served as a San Pedro Town Councilor during the 2012-2015 period. He was the only PUP councillor during this term. Nuñez says if he wins, the victory is not for him or his party, but for the long-neglected island town. “I am humbled and overwhelmed by all the support that I am receiving,” he said. “I will repay you with honesty, service, and transparency.” Although Nuñez has announced his intention to run, the San Pedro PUP has yet to officially endorse a candidate.
The full slate of each party is expected to be revealed soon, and the race for the town’s leadership will begin. Unofficial reports are that some of the slates will include new blood in an attempt to introduce young and energetic people with better ideas to improve San Pedro.
