On Saturday, June 12th, the Government of Mexico announced a donation of 400,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 to Belize, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Belize was the first country to receive its share of this generous donation of 100,000 doses which were delivered at the Philip Goldson International Airport by the Mexican Air Force.
According to a release from the Mexican Government, the vaccines are produced in Mexico. The amount assigned to Bolivia and Paraguay will be 150,000 of each. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that the aim is to show solidarity and give countries in the region access to the vaccine.
The vaccine arrived in Belize shortly after midday, where the Minister of Health and Wellness, the Honourable Michel Chebat, was on hand to receive the donation. On behalf of the Belizean people, he expressed deep appreciation to the Government of President Lopez Obrador and the Mexican people. The 100,000 doses are expected to bolster Belize’s ongoing vaccination program.
The production of the vaccines is a collaboration between Mexico and Argentina. First, the Argentine laboratory mAbxience produces the active substance of the vaccine, and then it is bottled in Mexico. This collaboration is expected to yield about 77 million doses for 2021.
