COVID-19 continues to take lives in Belize, and among the four recent deaths associated with the deadly disease is a female from San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. The patient had prior health conditions which are believed to have been worsened by the virus.
Director of Health Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, shared details on Monday, August 24th during the Ask the Experts live online show. Manzanero said the female island resident had liver complications, and when tested for other contributing factors, she was confirmed to be positive with COVID-19.
As of now, Belize has registered a total of 10 deaths related to COVID-19. The tenth was a woman who gave birth a few days ago via caesarean. She was apparently discharged from the hospital, but returned within 24 hours, suffering from respiratory distress, and her death was associated with a massive pulmonary embolism.
Manzanero indicated that this virus aggravates established health conditions including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, along with other non-communicable diseases. Some of the complications associated with COVID-19 are prothrombotic issues like clots in the bloodstream and lungs, causing strokes and/or heart attacks, leading to immediate deaths. The general populace is reminded to please wear their masks, practice social distancing, wash hands and if at all possible, stay home.
