During a blood drive organized by the San Pedro Cancer Society (SPCS) in collaboration with the Belize Blood Donor Service, a total of 38 pints of vital blood were collected. The drive took place on Saturday, July 9th at the San Carlos Medical Clinic on Pescador Drive with many community members turning out to donate blood; the drive was a grand success.
The healthy turnout by willing donors from 9:30AM to 4PM kept the clinic busy all day. The blood collected will go towards the San Pedro Town blood reserve to be held at the Belize Blood Bank in Belize City. The fact that one pint of blood can save up to three lives is another reason to applaud such a great turn out.
Vice-President of the San Pedro Cancer Society Miguel Perez shared with The San Pedro Sun his gratitude to those who showed up to support of the blood drive. “It was a great blood drive, we are very happy with the results. However, we do wish that the community would get more involved and realize that we are doing this for them,” said Perez. “It is something really important that we must support as it is for our safety.” The SPCS extends a big thank you to those businesses that encouraged their employees to come out and donate.
The organization has been busy assisting cancer patients with their individual fundraising in the past months. “We have been actively staying side by side with the patients that continue seeking treatment and need that extra hand,” said Perez.
The recent blood drive has been one of their major projects since the organization elected a new board of members at their Annual General Meeting on January 14th. A new set of projects are on the table according to the Perez, which will be made available to the public’s knowledge as soon as details are finalized. The support of the entire community would be required in order to successfully complete them.
Organizers would like to thank the staff at San Carlos Medical Clinic for facilitating the space, the staff from the Blood Donor Service, Tropic Air for transporting the blood and a huge THANK YOU to all the donors who came out. Keep a look out for the upcoming events of the San Pedro Cancer Society.
