Over a hundred island residents came out on Saturday, April 18th to take part in the Washington University of Health and Science (WUHS) Health Fair and the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II Pap Smear Campaign. Residents took advantage of the several free services offered to promote good health in the community, such as pap smears, breast exams, blood sugar tests, blood pressure, nutrition consultations and HIV testing.Health Fair PolyClinic San Pedro-3 Along with medical services, those in attendance also had the opportunity to receive valuable information from several community groups on the island. According to fair organizer Diana Sanchez, who is a Peace Corps Volunteer stationed in San Pedro, the day proved to be a huge success, with residents appreciative of the free service. “We had a great turn out. Everyone that was present benefited from the service. We were so glad to see people checking up and taking the time to ensure that all is well with their health. The people seemed interested in the topics discussed by the various groups,” said Sanchez. “We are grateful to all the students from WUHS that participated in the health fair and offered their service to the community. It’s important for everyone to keep up to date with their health status especially blood sugar and blood pressure. These are things that can easily be control but if left unchecked can lead to serious complications. Events such as these are important in any community,” said Sanchez.

Organizers would like to thank everyone that came out to the event. Special recognition goes out to the participating organization as well as the San Pedro Town Council, Tropic Air, Community Health Worker Atlantida Eiley and The San Pedro Sun.
