His Excellency Taiwanese Ambassador David Kuan-Chou Chien paid a visit to San Pedro Town on Saturday, May 15th. He met with Area Representative the Honourable Andre Perez, Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez, and their teams. They engaged in important discussions on how the island authorities can work together with the Taiwanese Embassy.
The new ambassador, who began his tenure in Belize on March 22nd, has been traveling across the country and meeting with different community and governmental leaders. His visit to San Pedro was organized through the Ministry of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation. Ambassador Chien was at the Mahogany Bay Village Resort, where Perez and his team, along with Mayor Nuñez and his councillors, held a short welcome ceremony.
Ambassador Chien was happy to make it to La Isla Bonita and shared a few words during the event at Mahogany Bay. He commended the strong relationship enjoyed by Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan) and reiterated his country’s full support for the Jewel. As previous Ambassador Remus L-Kou Chen, Chien looks forward to working closely with the island authorities on projects that will benefit islanders.
After the meeting, there was an exchange of gifts, followed by lunch. Ambassador Chien and his team enjoyed a tour of the island and visited the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.
Since 1989, Belize and Taiwan have enjoyed a bilateral relationship. Both countries have cooperation in areas such as education, agriculture, climate change resilience, infrastructural development, as well as culture. Taiwan’s presence is well-known in Belize, as they have helped the country in many areas, providing scholarships, grants, sponsorship, and donations, among other things.
