The Mayor of San Pedro Town Daniel Guerrero and his six councilmen have officially taken the oath of office. The public event took place on Monday March 16th at the San Pedro Central Park, in which the portfolios of each of the council members were announced. The members of the San Pedro Town Council were elected under the banner of the United Democratic Party (UDP) in the March 4th municipal election.
First to take the oath of office was two-term Mayor Daniel Guerrero. In his remarks, Guerrero called for unity amongst the residents of the island and took the opportunity to invite the opposition to work along with the council. “Elections are over and we are a council that was elected to serve everyone. For that reason, I am inviting the opposition members to join us and bring their ideas to the table so that together, we can move this island forward. I say this because I sincerely believe that they had some good ideas that we believe can help us bring more prosperity to the island.”
After the Mayor was sworn in by the Town Council Administrator Patricia Tillett, each of the councilors went through the similar process. One of the highlight of the event was the announcement of portfolios.
Mayor Guerrero was assigned the portfolio of Finance, Customer Service, Foreign Relation, Communications and Consultations Service and Ambergris Caye Master Plan. Gary Grief is the Deputy Mayor with responsibility of Tourism, Environment, Public Relations, Waste Management and Sanitation and Non Governmental Organizations. Flora Ancona, the only female councilor was given the responsibility of Public Events, Human Development and Women’s Affairs. Hector “Tito” Alamilla takes over the responsibility of Sports, Culture, Youth Development and Leisure. Ruben “Rux” Gonzalez takes the responsibility of Revenue Collection, Economic Development, Health and Education. Two term councilor Severo “Severito” Guerrero Jr. is in charge of Civic and Infrastructural Development, Community Beautification and Upkeep and Transport, and he shares the responsibility of Public Events with councilor Ancona. Councilor Gabriel “Gaby” Nuñez has the responsibility of Public Utilities, Housing and Planning, Community Protection and Safety and National Emergency Management Agency.
Also present at the event was the Area Representative and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr. The veteran politician took the opportunity to thank the residents of the island who have shown support to the incumbent party as its goes into its fifth consecutive term of office at the helm of the San Pedro Town Council. “We are very grateful for the support that our island residents have given to our party. As you know, 65% of the island is made up of people who migrated to the island. The show of support from those who migrated to the island and from our locals is an indicator that they want progress to continue,” indicated Heredia.
Following the short ceremony, the public had the opportunity to enjoy the music of Rompe Raja, as well as refreshments and cupcakes. While the swearing in is in accordance with the Local Government Act, as a party, the UDP has planned a victory rally for Saturday March 21st at the Central Park. Present at the rally will be the Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow.
