In order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, the Government of Belize has commenced the updating of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). To complement this effort, Belize has also taken the opportunity to facilitate the formulation of a Low Emission Development Strategy and Action Plan (LEDS), for the period 2020-2050. In this regard, a LEDS is a country-led and country-specific planning document covering all economic sectors for promoting economic growth and sustainable development, while reducing the emissions of Greenhouse Gases.
This activity is being led by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Climate Promise initiative and Belize’s Fourth National Communication and First Biennial Update Report to the UNFCCC project (FNC & FBUR). The main aim of the Climate Promise initiative is to support Belize to undertake an inclusive and transparent engagement process for enhancing the NDCs by 2020, with demonstrated increase in ambition, while the FNC & FBUR project’s aim is to assist Belize in the preparation and submission of its Fourth National Communication and First Biennial Update for the fulfillment of its obligations to the Convention.
To commence the LEDS development process, a virtual inception workshop was executed on December 10th, 2020. The virtual workshop was facilitated by a consulting firm named “Vivid Economics”, which was hired to engage, coordinate, facilitate and support the development of the LEDS. The main aim of the virtual workshop was to introduce the LEDS process, highlight mitigation actions being discussed in NDC (which are related to the LEDS development process) and identify potential options for medium term development.
The virtual workshop was attended by stakeholders from Government and Non-Government Organizations based in Belize.
