The destruction of the natural habitat to the south of San Pedro is a sad thing to see. Similarly, it is sad to walk the beaches and see human trash strewn all over. We are talking about environmental destruction that affects tourism and wildlife as well as the quality of life for the residents of the island.
I believe those who own beachfront land must be held responsible for keeping the beach clean. I believe those who own land subject to development must be held responsible for maintaining that land in an environmentally healthy condition. It is not environmentally healthy to destroy the wildlife habitat, rip out all the ground cover, open the land to the erosion of rain and wind.
There should be an environmental tax paid by those who own the land and abuse it to the detriment of the island, the wildlife, and the residents. We are subsidizing the land owners who profit greatly from the sale of island properties.
