A press release issued by the Belize Fisheries Department informs that the last day to consume the Queen Conch (Strombus gigas) will be on Friday, June 24, 2016. The fishing community is advised that all conch fishing activities shall cease as of this date until the opening of the next fishing season on Saturday, October 1, 2016.
The Belize Fisheries Department further advises Restaurateurs and the General Public to use, consume and dispose of all Queen Conch meat in their possession on or before June 24th. The public is reminded that no person or establishment shall have in possession any conch during the closed season. Any person or establishment found in possession of the Queen Conch meat after Friday June 24th will be charged and prosecuted in accordance with Regulation 6 of Principal Regulations (Chapter 210’s of the Laws of Belize – Revised Edition 2000-2003).
The Department hereby makes a special appeal to fishers and the public, to uphold the Fisheries Regulations in regards to conch and other marine products, and urges all responsible citizens to call the Department at 224-4552 / 203-2623 to report any violations.
