San Pedro joins the world in celebrating Earth Day 2012 through a massive clean up educational campaign, commencing April 16th and culminating on Earth Day, April 22nd.
Councilor Carlos Barrientos, councilor tasked with the portfolio of Town Beautification is at work assuring that the beaches were cleaned all through the Easter Vacation. He pointed out the fact that even after such a large influx of visitors, our beaches remained very clean.
He plans to continue “Maintaining our Island Clean” through education and action. Barrientos, along with other councilors will be visiting the various schools sharing the importance of garbage collection, cleanliness and keeping San Pedro Clean throughout the week.
In addition Councillor Barrientos is inviting businesses, individuals and residents to join in the cause by being part of the massive clean up campaign. According to Barrientos, the clean up will include the entire scope of the island; residential and or business along the beach side. Cleaning will be done daily leading up to April 22nd. T-Shirts bearing the Earth Day Logo to bring awareness to Earth Day are available.
Every year Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22nd and marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement which commenced in 1970. Earth Day 1970 capitalized on the emerging consciousness, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns front and center.
