The Belize Tourism Industry Association San Pedro Chapter (SP BTIA) is excited to announce its Beer Fest with Rice and Beans competition. The event, co-sponsored by Bowen & Bowen, The San Pedro Town Council, the Belize Tourism Board, and the Capricorn Restaurant, will be from 4-9PM on Saturday, August 5th, at the Capricorn Restaurant, 2.5 miles north of San Pedro Town.
The entrance fee is $5 per person 18 years and older; children are free. The beachside event includes music by DJ Debbie, rice and bean food vendors, beach games, and fun competitions. Bowen & Bowen will showcase a variety of craft beers, Shandy’s, Belikin signature beers, Heineken, Guinness, and Land Shark, to name a few. The price is $8 for craft beers and $6 for Shandy’s and other beers. Capricorn will also host a BBQ, a select menu of items from their restaurant, and a bar serving libations.
There will also be a Rice and Beans competition where participants pre-register at the Tourism Information Center to compete. Three prominent island chefs will “blind taste test” the dishes identified by a random number. The winner receives a $500 grand prize from the San Pedro Town Council.
Another competition will see participants identifying beers by taste only. After a series of runoffs, a handful of winners will compete for the grand prize of a case of beer and gift certificates from local restaurants and bars.
According to SP BTIA Chairwoman Tamara Sniffin, the organization hopes to make this an annual event. “Not only will this festival raise funds needed to support our Tourism Information Center, but this year we will also give 20% of the proceeds to our neighbors on the same block, the San Pedro Artisan Market, to beautify the area. Most importantly, festivals like this celebrate our Belizean culture and can attract tourists and mainland visitors. Who doesn’t love a good plate of rice and beans with a cold beer? There’s a lot of potential for this to grow into something people look forward to each year,” she said.
