The island’s first radio station, Reef Radio, celebrated its 18th anniversary on Saturday, August 19th at the Honourable Louis Sylvester Sporting Complex. The celebration saw live performances and fabulous giveaways, and lots of entertainment.
Reef Radio supporters joined the celebration early in the evening, and founder Eiden Salazar warmly welcomed everyone to the special occasion. The program of events began shortly after 8PM. “I am happy that everyone came out tonight to join us for this special evening,” said Salazar. “The radio is not really a business; it is a service for the community.” Reef Radio has assisted island residents in all possible aspects throughout its existence. It has been the main means of massive communication when residents are in crisis and in need of emergency donations. Every successful radiothon/telethon or any fundraiser of its kind has been possible through the generous assistance of Reef Radio.
For an entrance fee of $10, attendees received a free drink courtesy of Traveller’s Liquors, and enjoyed enjoying a night full of fun and music. The island’s number one band, Rompe Raja, lit up the stage with their well-known hits and the crowd danced to their hearts’ content. During intermissions, prizes were raffled out.
Also taking the stage was Ismael ‘El Buki’ Chacon, straight from Belmopan City. The atmosphere was quite nostalgic and romantic, as El Buki interpreted Mexican singer Marco Antonio Solis.
Desmond Berry made his appearance as well, singing melodies from his repertoire as featured on the national Karaoke TV competition ‘KTV’. Berry’s performance was followed by the special guest band Super Furia, hailing from the Orange Walk District. An energetic crowd danced all night to Super Furia’s cumbia hits.
Reef Radio would like to thank everyone that came out and joined in their anniversary celebration. Special thanks to the sponsors who made the event possible: Caribbean Queen, Ocean Ferry Water Taxi, Bowen and Bowen, The San Pedro Town Council, Traveller’s Liquors, and Caribbean Depot.
