As the new school year approaches (August 10th), many families economically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic face the challenge of paying for their children’s education. The crisis is far from over, and those less fortunate are finding it difficult to afford pending school fees. The People’s United Party (PUP) Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South (BRS) Andre Perez (left) and his team created a School Assistance Program in June to assist those in need. As a result, $18,000 will go toward helping over 300 selected primary school students from San Pedro Town and Caye Caulker in the upcoming school year.
Among these hundreds of students, Perez’ Financial Aid committee selected the top 10 students, granting them a full scholarship after achieving an average of 95% and above. On Tuesday, June 30th, the high achievers were awarded at a short award ceremony celebrating their academic accomplishment.
Perez said that the initiative came after recognizing the harsh economic times families on both islands are facing because of the pandemic.
He and the PUP BRS Executive believe that education is imperative for the future of the community and the country. A similar event is expected to take place next week in Caye Caulker.
