Recently graduated San Pedro High School (SPHS) students, Virginia Joselin Vasquez and Elladria Levilette Garcia received Certificates of Excellence in the May-June Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations along with 364 other top students from around the country. The Ministry of Education hosted its annual awards ceremony at the St. Catherine’s Academy auditorium in Belize City on Wednesday morning. The Ministry awarded 15 top performers in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE). SPHS’ Tanairi Arana also achieved a Certificate of Excellence but could not attend the award ceremony.
Rhiki Alexander Alegría of St. John’s Junior College (SJJC) and Irene Gisselle Flores of Edward P. Yorke High School won top honors, each receiving a full 2-year scholarship from the Ministry of Education and a Samsung tablet from Belize Telemedia Ltd.
Rhiki Alegría won top honors as the most outstanding student; he sat 18 examinations and achieved 16 Grade I passes at the General Proficiency Level, of which he achieved 1st place for Music, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, and Physical Education and Sport. His other Grade I passes were in Biology, Chemistry, English A, English B (Literature), Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Office Administration, Physics, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Spanish, and Human and Social Biology. He also passed Religious Education with a Grade II in and passed Visual Arts with a Grade III. He also received the Subject Group award in the Sciences.
E.P. Yorke’s Irene Flores had 13 Grade I passes at the General Proficiency Level; of which she achieved 1st place in English B (Literature). Her other Grade I passes included Biology, Chemistry, English A, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies, Spanish, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Physical Education and Sport, and Human and Social Biology. She also passed Agricultural Science SA and Office Administration with a Grade II.
The third most outstanding candidate, Maribel Wu of St. Catherine’s Academy received a Samsung cellular phone.
Glevaughn Gordon Smith of Edward P. Yorke also received the Subject Group Award in Technical/Vocational subjects; and 34 other students were awarded for excellence in individual subjects.
Five top students got Certificates of Excellence and three achieved Certificates of Recognition in the CAPE examinations, and 15 students received awards at the top performers in 30 CAPE units.
This year’s open scholarship goes to Jose Guerrero of SJJC who passed five subjects with Grade I’s: Biology Unit 1 in which he achieved 1st place, Biology Unit 2, Caribbean Studies, Chemistry Unit 1 and Communication Studies, and Chemistry Unit 2, Spanish Unit 1 and Spanish Unit 2 with Grade II’s. Mr. Guerrero also achieved first place for Biology Unit 1.
Nadiya Elletisha Sedasey, also of SJCJC, was the 2nd most outstanding student with 6 Grade I passes in which she also achieved 1st place: Applied Mathematics Unit 1, Applied Mathematics Unit 2, Integrated Mathematics, Physics Unit 1, Pure Mathematics Unit 1 and Pure Mathematics Unit 2. She also passed Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies with a Grade II and Physics Unit 2 with a Grade III.
