Students from the San Pedro High School’s (SPHS) Drama Club: Marthalicia Vasquez, Jubilee Garcia, and Bessy Gongora, returned from their one-week exchange program in Los Angeles, California, USA on Sunday, June 5th.
With help from coordinators Debbie and Larry Heimgartner, the group was rehearsing weekly to perfect their 30-minute dramatic skit that was performed at the Los Angeles Harbor College. The performance contained social issues that deal with depression, divorce, and suicide. Alongside exchange students from London and Mexico, the girls had an unforgettable experience at the college.
According to the three SPHS students, their stay in Los Angeles was short but worthwhile. After arriving and settling, the girls introduced themselves to their classmates and socialized with students from different cultural backgrounds throughout the week. The highlight of their visit was the chance they had to perform their skit with other exchange students. The drama club was more than delighted to put on a good performance, and represent Belize in a positive manner. “When it was time for us to perform, all of the audience was left surprised at how we brought this as our story. It was our time to let the world know that teenagers are making a change,” said Vasquez.
Students also had time to explore Los Angeles. They visited Disneyland, where they relived their childhood memories, and had so much fun on/at the different attractions. The group also had the chance to visit Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Venice Beach. Overall, the group had a great experience, and made lasting friendships. Their visit to the United States has inspired all three students to possibly study abroad, and they will apply to Harbor College to pursue their love of acting.
The group would like to give thanks to Mr. Juan for establishing the student-exchange program at SPHS, Debbie and Larry Heimgartner for practicing with them, and their parents for supporting them along every step of the way. They also would like to wish next year’s recipients the best of luck, and encourage them to embrace the unique life-changing experience.
