Education is definitely the key to success, and as a part of Education Month, Mayor Daniel Guerrero, Councilor Ruben Gonzalez, and members from the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) visited the San Pedro High School, Holy Cross Anglican School, Ambergris Caye Elementary School, Isla Bonita Elementary School, New Horizon Seventh-day Adventist School, and the San Pedro Roman Catholic School. The initial purpose for the Mayor’s visit was to emphasize the importance of education and to assist schools in renovating, improving, or aiding all schools visited.SPTC Mayor Daniel Guerrero School Visit-15
Mayor Guerrero’s agenda included giving a welcome to the student body of each school, touring each classroom and interacting with teachers to hear their needed requests. “After various school visits, it is apparent that many schools are in need of repairs, and improvements to infrastructure are needed,” said Guerrero. He pledged to put a commitment on education, and promised to supply schools with needed materials to improve the overall quality of the education system in San Pedro.SPTC Mayor Daniel Guerrero School Visit-18
In the past, the SPTC has been involved in various schools, but now they are focusing more on students and teachers. According to Mayor Guerrero, he plans to devote himself to making education a top priority. “This year, the council has decided to invest more in education, which includes the children and institutions. We are looking at a wish list from every single school, including preschools. I am a great believer in education, so I want to do everything I can do,” said Mayor Guerrero.SPTC Mayor Daniel Guerrero School Visit-16
With his plan of action, he hopes that his investment will result in positive changes in a time span of 15 years. “I honestly think we cannot lose in investing in education, it’s a win-win situation,” said Mayor Guerrero.SPTC Mayor Daniel Guerrero School Visit-8
On Tuesday, May 24th, Mayor Guerrero’s last visit was to the San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRC), which is San Pedro’s largest school. All classes from preschool up to Standard Six gathered around the palapa for a morning assembly. Before Mayor Guerrero was formally introduced, the SPRC treated the mayor and his visitors to an array of presentations.SPTC Mayor Daniel Guerrero School Visit-12
The theme for this year’s Education Month is “Reading: I see the world, and Writing: I change the world.” Before starting off the assembly, the students recited the national prayer, sang the national anthem, gave a tribute, and pledge to their school. A group from Ms. Loren Lozano’s Infant Two class gave a dance presentation that was performed at the Festival of Arts. Then the Infant One class performed a cheerleading skit, and Mr. Luis Standard One class performed an act that also won them an award at the Festival of Arts.SPTC Mayor Daniel Guerrero School Visit-3
Mayor Daniel congratulated the three presentations and proceeded with his mayoral address.
“The theme for this year is indeed a powerful one. Reading and writing are the building blocks of education and they have the ability to inspire, motivate, change lives, minds, and the course of history. It is important for all students to get an education, because at the end of the day, no one can take that away,” said Mayor Guerrero.
The mayor continued to advise the students to obey their parents, and appreciate them for making the sacrifice to send them to school. Students were counseled to do a good job in school, do their homework, and respect their teachers. In closing, the mayor encouraged the student body to read more books, enjoy the art of writing, and be more creative.SPTC Mayor Daniel Guerrero School Visit-9
After Standard Five presented a hand-made art piece to the mayor, Councilor Ruben Gonzalez took the stage and presented Principal Kay with a frame of the National Assembly for 2015-2018, and additional posters for each classroom to have. Shortly after, Father Scott showcased a life-size frame of the Virgin Mary, and gave the frame to Principal Kay as a token.

Education Month for the RC school was comprised of many educational activities such as “On the spot writing competition”, a theme poster competition, and a spelling bee. For last, awards for the first, second, and third place winners of the Spelling Bee were given to the winners of Infant One, and Infant Two.
All of the principals, teachers, faculty, parents, and students from all visited schools extend their appreciation to the SPTC for visiting, and promising to make improvements to their schools.
