Isla Bonita Elementary School’s upper division students displayed their knowledge on social issues in an Open House held on Friday, January 23rd. The students prepared informational booths on the Rights of a Child, Child Abuse, Alcohol Abuse, Drug Abuse, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) and HIV/AIDS. Several community members and students from the other island primary schools attended the Open House where they received valuable information on the issues that are rising in San Pedro.
The Open House started shortly after 1PM, and well-prepared students presented on their topics with the aid of pamphlets, pictures, and examples. Each booth also created a game relating to the topic and prizes were given to the winners of the games.
The students elaborated on the harmful effects of alcohol and drug abuse, and how it is affecting our community. Emphasis was placed on underage drinking in the island, and the students even gave possible solutions to the issue, such as increase in recreational facilities and counseling for underage drinkers. Another pressing issue discussed was the rights of a child and child abuse. Information pamphlets were handed out citing the rights of a child. 
The students also explained the different types of abuse that can be committed against a child and methods that can be taken to reduce abuse. The final issues discussed was HIV/AIDS and STDs. The groups in charge of these topics elaborated on the stigma that comes along with HIV/AIDS and STDs. The students stated that children should be better educated on the topic from a young age in order to prevent the transmission of the virus. Early education could also go a long way in reducing the associated stigma.
The open house was definitely a huge success, and Isla Bonita Elementary School administrators would like to thank everyone that came out and attended.
