Community effort leads to new building at the Caye Caulker Roman Catholic School

Caye Caulker Roman Catholic Primary School (CCRC) now boasts four new classrooms thanks to an initiative by the 2010-2013 Caye Caulker Village Council and support from the island’s community. After more than a year and half under construction, the building was finally inaugurated during a ceremony held on Thursday, October 30th. Officially cutting the ribbon and handing over the building to school officials was former Village Chairman, Alberto Villanueva and Area Representative Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr.1509293_823533851000663_2584658286634926521_n
According to Villanueva, Caye Caulker keeps growing and there is overcrowding at the island’s only primary school. During his time in office he saw the need to expand the school to create more space for students. The much needed classrooms will accommodate over a hundred students and will provide students with a comfortable learning environment. “The building was done because we saw a basic need in our community. The school’s administration had been seeking assistance from the Government of Belize for many years and nothing was achieved. So we took it upon ourselves to spearhead the project and with the help of the community we now can boast four new classrooms. This shows that as a community we can do so much more than if we try to do something alone,” said Villanueva.10456799_823533624334019_8521640627728304202_n
The construction the two story 65-foot by 30-foot concrete building, had an estimated cost of $290,000 and accommodates four class rooms. The first floor of the building was financed by the Caye Caulker Village Council, the community and Heredia, while the second floor was financed by Atlantic Bank Limited and the Belize Roman Catholic Diocese. Heredia donated $20,000 towards the project.
CCRC would like to extend a big thanks to the 2010-2013 Caye Caulker Village Council, Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr., Immer Grajales, Seaside Cabañas, the Chinese community in Caye Caulker, the Belize Roman Catholic Diocese and Atlantic Bank Limited.1932402_723476991078505_7771713596397381327_n
