On Friday, August 9th, Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr. and Mayor Daniel Guerrero handed over financial assistance checks to the second group of students who were selected to receive educational subsidies from the Government of Belize’s commitment to education program.

Subsidies Presented to Students-5A total of 100 subsidies were issued to Belize Rural South Area by the government. The subsidies ranged from $300-$500 for high school students, $800-$1000 for 6th form students and a maximum of $1,500 for students attending university studies in the country. Minister Heredia, through the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), will also be giving out subsidies to an additional 150 students of the area to aid with educational expenses.

In addition the San Pedro Town Council sponsored tuition scholarships to islanders interested in pursuing careers in nursing or becoming police officers. “This year offered four scholarships, two for nursing and two for police officers. The two spots for nursing have been filled, but we are still waiting for interested persons for the police scholarship. The reason we are doing this is to have our own nurses and policemen on the island,” said Mayor Guerrero. The scholarship will cover only tuition fees, and classes are held on the mainland. To apply for the two remaining scholarships, interested persons may present an application letter for the scholarship plus an acceptance letter from the educational institution to the San Pedro Town Council during normal working hours.
