Kenrick “Kenny” Brackett, town councilor responsible for transport has joined forces with The San Pedro Sun, The Reef Radio and Ambergris Today to launch a traffic safety poster and essay contest under the title, “The Importance of Traffic Safety.”
The poster contest is slated for primary grade students and is divided into three different age groups. Infant 1 and 2, Standard 1,2 and 3 and Standard 4,5 and 6. The students are to design posters that include the various traffic signs such as pedestrian crossing, stop, yield and roundabout and what they mean. Each of the three age groups will choose one winning poster to be submitted to the judging finale. Along with the submission each age group must collectively create an advertising “jingle” or ad to go along with the poster.
For high school students there will be an essay contest divided into two different groups, First and Second Form as one and Third and Fourth Form as second. The essay is limited to 300 words and should not only include the purpose of the signs listed above but the dangers of drinking and driving as well as why traffic safety is important. Each of the two groups will choose one winning essay to be submitted to the judging finale and collectively create an advertising “jingle” or ad to go along with the essay.
The submission deadline of the posters and essays is May 31st. The entries can either be delivered to the Town Council or to the offices of any of the three sponsors, The San Pedro Sun, The Reef Radio or Ambergris Today. The grand judging finale will be held on Friday, June 8th at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium.
The San Pedro Town Council will be sponsoring some of the prizes and is appealing to the community to assist with sponsoring prizes as well. The winning poster jingle or ad, and essay jingle or ad will be recorded and aired on Reef Radio.
