Police have detained one suspect in connection with the discovery of the lifeless body of 21-year-old Caye Caulker resident Christopher Meighan in a hotel in San Pedro Town on Friday, September 28th. Meighan was found by an employee shortly after 11AM in a sitting position between two beds in a pool of blood with what appeared to be a large cut wound to the throat area, a stab wound to the left lower abdomen and one stab wound to the left foot. Police transported the body to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II where Meighan was pronounced dead on arrival and later transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital’s morgue in Belize City.
According to the initial investigation, the room was Meighan was found had been booked by a Belizean American, who along with the deceased and a third person checked into the room on Thursday, September 27th around 9:30PM. The room was apparently booked for one night only. The following day, when the guests failed to check out at 11AM, an employee went to check the room and discovered Meighan’s body. Police were immediately called, and an investigation began. Meighan’s companions were not in the room, and after police intensified their efforts, they were able to detain the Belizean-American suspect at the Philip Goldson International Airport in Ladyville, attempting to leave the country. The suspect was placed in police custody pending the results from the investigation.
Family and friends are shocked to hear that their beloved Meighan was brutally killed. They describe him as a calm and fun person, who loved the island life, the sea, and cooking. The family hopes to receive good news from the investigation soon and have the responsible person/s punished for the death of their loved one.
