Police on Ambergris Caye have arrested and charged 20-year-old Simon Velasquez, a laborer of the Boca del Rio area of San Pedro Town. Velasquez is being accused of charging at and chopping, 31-year old Tyron Garnett on Friday August 22nd while on Angel Coral Street.
According to Police, sometime around 4:45PM on Friday, Garnett was driving a white Toyota Hilux pick-up truck belonging to Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) on Angel Coral Street from the direction of Caribbean Street southwards. Garnett told police that as he was heading southwards; his attention was drawn to a group of men running from Ambergris Street and onto Angel Coral Street, forcing him to come to a complete stop. At that point, a man later identified as Velasquez allegedly proceeded towards the vehicle with a machete in hand and charged at Garnett. According to the BTL employee, Velasquez began knocking the driver’s side glass window with the machete and eventually slipping the machete through the widow that was not completely closed. Garnett told police that he pushed the machete downwards to prevent getting major injuries and in the process, he received cut wounds to three of his fingers on his left hand. In the process, the vehicle’s window valued at $400 was broken.
Garnett was taken to a medical doctor who certified his injuries as wounding. As a result of further investigation police arrested and charged Velasquez and was taken to the Belize City Magistrate Court where he was arraigned. Because police believed Velasquez may be experiencing mental problems, police requested that he be taken for evaluation.
