As the world recovers from the blunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, the island’s Saga Humane Society, continues operating, doing their best to shelter homeless animals and provide services to the community. The non-profit organization welcomes volunteers and is also in need of financial support. Anyone willing and able to donate can either visit their office on Sea Start Street or click https://bit.ly/3w18R88
Saga is currently at full capacity with dogs and cats and unable to take additional surrendered pets. However, if someone sees a stray animal in need, they can contact Saga, and they will do their best to assist. Anyone interested in adopting a pet can visit their office located on Sea Star Street between the hours of Tuesday through Friday, 9AM to 5PM, and Saturday, 9AM – Noon. Pet adoptions are only approved if the person can prove he/she is capable of adequately caring for the animal.
San Pedro’s Saga Humane Society was founded in 1999 by a small group of women. Their mission was to salvage the livelihood of the animals surrendered by their owners and left on the streets. The humane society also counts with the island’s only non-profit veterinary clinic. The services available include spay/neuter, vaccination campaigns, and education programs. The goal is to build a permanent animal education center on Ambergris Caye to find a long-term solution and end animal abuse, neglect, and overpopulation.
